Cutting Costs, Not Corners

by Holly Moffitt

In today's world, a glimpse at a new homeowner's search history is likely to reveal search terms like "Home renovations on a budget," "Average costs for A, B, C projects," or "Affordable hacks for common issues." Whether you're a first-time homeowner or a seasoned DIY enthusiast, the shock of skyrocketing prices for everything, from lumber to plumbing, can be an eye-opener. Even that tiny can of Pringles at the self-checkout seems exorbitant. You justify it by thinking, "I can repurpose it for nails or something." But is it possible to renovate on a budget in this day and age? The answer is a resounding yes. Your budget might be different from someone else's, but there are strategic decisions you can make to save money without compromising the quality or safety of your renovation project.

  1. DIY Projects If you have the skills and the willingness to learn, consider handling installation and repairs yourself. Online platforms like YouTube offer a wealth of tutorials on tasks such as installing a wall outlet, fixing a sink trap, tiling a mudroom, or replacing damaged drywall. You can also find installation guides on the product pages of your favorite hardware or big box stores, making DIY projects more accessible than ever.
  2. Bargain Shopping When you opt to take on a DIY project, the cost of materials can be a major concern. Don't let the high-end finishes in million-dollar homes intimidate you. Calculate the square footage of the area you plan to renovate by multiplying its length and width. Then, check how much square footage a single box of your chosen flooring material can cover. For example, if a box covers 14 sq ft and you have 144 sq ft to cover, you'll need approximately 10.2 boxes. To be safe, buy 11 or even 12 boxes, accounting for any errors or future repairs.
  3. Don't Get Caught Up in Brand Names Opt for cost-effective materials within your budget. Minimum-grade underlayment, for example, can serve your purpose well without breaking the bank. Investing twice as much in premium underlayment isn't necessary. Keep it simple and save money. For items like vinyl and laminate plank flooring, minimal tools are required, including a circular saw, pencil, straight edge, rubber hammer, and a small wooden block to secure the pieces together. Don't be lured by fancy kits with celebrity endorsements. Also, consider checking platforms like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for discounted materials that others are trying to offload.
  4. Seek Advice from Experienced Individuals Turn to the experts you know and trust. Consult with someone experienced, perhaps an older family member or friend, who can offer valuable guidance without charging an hourly fee. They can share their knowledge and help you avoid unnecessary expenses. There are times when hiring a professional is essential, but seeking advice from someone with hands-on experience can be a cost-effective alternative.

As a new homeowner, taking on various maintenance roles, from roofer to plumber, can seem daunting. However, you can create memorable moments as you learn new skills and tackle DIY projects. Whether it's your sister teaching you to wallpaper from the top of a tall ladder or your wise old friend helping with complex tasks, the experiences and savings can be priceless.
